Transport Prospectus 2025

The Melton Highway is a critical connection road between the Western Highway and Calder Freeway. The road is not suitable for the high volume of traffic using the road and is a rural standard carriageway with unsealed shoulders, open drains and non-existent pedestrian facilities.

Safety

In the five-year period between 2014 and 2020 there were 76 traffic accidents recorded on the Melton Highway including 30 serious crashes. In total 46 people have been injured while using this piece of road in the last five years.

Congestion

Melton Highway from The Regency in Hillside to Leakes Road Melton is estimated to carry approximately 31,000 vehicles. Traffic modelling commissioned by Council indicate that this will increase to over 60,000 vehicles per day by 2031

Population

In 2022, the population of Fraser Rise was 12,300, and it is projected to increase to over 34,000 by 2051. Bonnie Brook currently 630 people will increase to 27,000 by 2051 and Grangefields will increase from 85 to 17,000. Warrensbrook and Melton East Precinct Structure Plans will see an increase from a population of 700 to accommodate over 44,000 by 2051.

Solution

Upgrading the Highway to urban standard and duplication from The Regency Hillside to Leakes Road Melton is needed to not only meet current demand, but to support the booming growth in population.

• Melton Highway upgraded to urban standard and duplicated from The Regency Hillside to Leakes Road Melton.

• Plumpton Road intersection upgraded.

• New pedestrian and cycling path along the Highway.
